Who Am I?

http://www.uktribes.com/

I personally fit into several of the groups, that are advertised on the website above.

MAINSTREAM - I fit into this category, because I am a teenager who follows the latest' everything in this modern day society. I hang out in social parts of town and do the average stuff a day to day teen would do. I listen to the radio and I know about fresh things that happen over social media or TV. I am your average teenage girl. I like to stick to what I know and what is safe than be adventurous. Most of the time. This is why I fit into several teams...

In this category, is labelled 'Fangirls'. If you have never come across a fangirl before in your life... you have now. 'Fangirl' should probably be my middle name. Although I hate to admit it, I am a massive fangirl. My obsessions go from bands and singers to Disney characters and films. I spend most of the day flicking through twitter and tumblr and Netflix finding things to fall in love with. I used to follow bands like 'The Wanted', but then when they broke up, I had to find some new talent. Music is a massive part of my life - I don't know how I'd function without it to be honest. I'm into everything and anything, but Shawn Mendes is someone whom I support a great deal and going to see him for the first time earlier on this year in March, was probably the best thing ever. However, music isn't just what I cry over. Films and TV shows get me too. Also book series, yes I am a nerd and a geek and I'd probably rather sit in and watch Netflix and eat pizza than go out clubbing. 'Cringey' or not - it's a part of what makes me, me. Just a part.

I also find myself slotting into the group of 'Townies' and 'Makers' too. I work in town - which gives me a good excuse to find myself shopping there a few times. I just love shopping. It's like a relaxing, enjoyable workout for us girls. True. I love to buy new makeup and clothes (whatever is the fashion), with the money I kind of don't have.
When it comes to the other group, I make social media accounts into second lives. That's all I'm going to say.

ALTERNATIVES - I fit into this group, purely for the reason that I want to stand out and be different, but I just end up getting drawn back into the mainstream population, because I'm a lazy teenager.

SUPERFANS - I fit into this group, because unlike a traditional fangirl, I take inspiration from the things I obsess over and make versions of my own. I'm currently writing a book series called, 'The Ashbourne Road Project', which features inspirational ideas from movies and books like, The Hunger Games, The Maze Runner, Teen Wolf, Pretty Little Liars, Harry Potter, Once Upon A Time etc.. (basically things I am in love with). I love to write and create characters and plot lines for them. This proves I go above and beyond the average fangirl. I don't know why I'm 'bragging' about this, because it's sad. Very sad.

GET PAID CREW - I fit into this sub-category in the 'URBAN' group, because I have a job, so I can earn lots of money. I only really work hard in order to get my wages so I can go to great things and meet great people - also so I can buy some nice great clothes too maybe. And makeup... that's very important too.

STYLERS - I like to think I fit into this category, because I am a teenage girl who works in fashion and I like to think I follow the fashion as best as I can, with the money I have.

TRACKIES - I think we can all hold our hands up and say we are part of this group from time to time. There's nothing better than getting into your comfy clothes and ordering in pizza whilst watching your favourite show on Netflix all night... even talking about it now gives me a warm feeling. It's the best thing ever. I hate that now it is made into a joke of a 'Netflix and chill' kind of thing. Like no, that's not what were doing. We are being teenagers and we are being lazy teenagers... nothing will be happening other than scoffing our face full of snacks and crying over the deaths of our favourite fictional characters. Yes, this is something I do often... too often.

TRENDIES - I personally think I fit into this category more than I do of the 'MAINSTREAM'. This category is like a unique twist on the 'typical teenage girl'. Don't get me wrong, I am digging all the latest and hottest trends, but I feel like this is a more comfortable group for me. Vintage fashion is something that just draws me in and music is something which I believe in a lot. Without music and film I don't know where I would be... The world would suck without it, basically.

VLOGGERS - I don't make YouTube videos, but hey, who says a girl can't dream.

HIPSTERS - I'm not even going to comment, because I'll probably get called a 'try-hard'. Going of tangent.. that's one of my favourite 5SOS songs. Serious.

Celebrities

This is such a hard question. I wouldn't exactly compare myself to any celebrities, because I'm just a normal teenage girl, there's nothing special about me.

I really look up to a budding author from America who, like me, is passionate about writing. Her name is Jenna Moreci. She's not famous by any means... but she has a lot of subscribers and a lot of fellow followers who are all like me. I find her work inspirational and her advice saves my life. It really does. Here's a link to one of her videos: 'Writing For Yourself' - https://youtu.be/Ekqw_JDh1ac

I have been supporting a band called 'Only The Young' for a very long time and can we just appreciate how amazingly gorgeous Betsy and Parisa are. They are 100% goals. (In English terms, this means I think they are excellent role models and I get my clothing style from these two girls, also they are very iconic and just pretty... they're very pretty)

In fact.. I found the perfect photo.
All 3 of my style icons in one photo... Let's take in the beauty and appreciate their amazingness.

As you can probably tell from my blog feed, I love The Maze Runner Series (and anything surrounding that), so that's Teen Wolf, Pretty Little Liars, Skins, Once Upon A Time, The Hunger Games, Harry Potter... I could go on and on. Because of that, I had to include in this post, my 3 ultimate queens of the film industry. I mean don't get me wrong there are lots of actresses out there whom I wish to look like and sound like and act like, but these 3 are very special to me.

Jennifer Lawrence , Kaya Scodelario and Emma Watson. Absolute beauties.

There's a lot of women in the music and film industry whom I aspire to be like, however I try not to let it take over my life too much. I don't stress and panic if I don't look like, for example, Kaya one day, because Kaya is Kaya and I am myself. If I feel I look good one day, I'll take a selfies or something. I feel like society has made girls feel so insecure about themselves these days. I feel like there is a 'perfect' image being created by 'Photoshop' etc., basically it's fake. I feel like girls' confidence has been knocked to 0 because of the media and what society describes to be the best girlfriend or singer etc. that a male or other female looks for when they are finding a lover. As girls, we get jealous and stressed and it isn't fair.

Camera Work

Arc Shot

It took a while to find an arc shot. I finally found one from an episode in 'Pretty Little Liars'.
At 0.18 - 0.23 an arc shot of the girls starting from Shana is produced.

Camera Work in US TV Drama: Teen Wolf (Seasons 1&2)

clip : 'funniest moments - teen wolf (season 1)'

This short video on YouTube is a collection of second clips from the hit TV Drama; 'Teen Wolf'. Each clip is around 5-20 seconds long.

Looking at the first 2 minutes of this clip, I analysed the following:

Clip 1
0.00 - 0.04 - Medium shot of the character of Scott McCall walking towards the camera with a baseball bat in his hand, looking worried. He is engaging with the environment as it is set at night time, with the woods in the foreground and there is an eerie point being made of him being alone. The camera moves with him towards the audience as he walks forward. This makes it tense for the audience to watch as anyone could be lurking.

0.05 - The scene soon becomes a two shot, as the camera moves to the character of Stiles who causes Scott to jump when he appears from the roof above Scott and makes him jump. This is probably, reliving for the audience as the tense atmosphere gets broken, with a continued amusing conversation then between the two best friends.

Clip 2
0.016 - Jackson and Scott are seen having a conversation in a mid/two-shot. Over the shoulder is being used as each character is talking to show the audience what action is happening around them, which in this case, is nothing too important.

Clip 3
0.30 - Stiles and Scott are seen digging a hole and the camera is tilted upwards. This creates panic for the audience. The camera is placed, as so the audience were maybe in the hole looking up. This is quite scary for the viewer and it shows that the characters at this point, have more power over us. They are superior.

0.34 - Camera angle shifts to show Stiles' facial expression. We see a close-up of his face and can witness as viewers the anxiety he is feeling.

Clip 4
0.44- Two shot of Scott and his Mum. Over the shoulder technique is being used here. Mid close-up is being used to show the expressions each character is using. It's a flowing conversation and we can tell this from the quick angle-reverse angle shots being used. It proves a close bond between the two relatives.

1.04 - As characters finish the conversation, the camera zooms out of the scene and gives us a long shot finally, of a bedroom, which shows the bond is close between the two characters, as they are in a fairly personal location.

Clip 5
1.05 - Two shot (again), of Scott and his coach. Over the shoulder is being used frequently and also close up, depending on what the coach is saying to Scott, so we as viewers can read his facial expressions, which in this situation, is confused.

1.18- Long - shot of the location. We see a school office, filled with items that relate to lacrosse. The viewers get a feel for the TV show and what it is about. A sub genre of sport could be noted.

Clip 6
1.20 - Extreme close-up of Stiles in a police car behind some kind of caged barrier. This extreme close up and close-up swaps, creates panic for the character.

1.23- Derek is shown on the other side of the barrier, looking angry. Only a mid-shot is used here, probably because, Stiles is more of a main character in this scene.

Clip 7
1.27 - Scott is being interrogated by his Mum. Scott is on the floor and he is being shown to us from a low angle whilst his Mum is talking to him. This makes him seem vulnerable and weak, but also that his Mum holds the power at this point.

1.33 - Close- up of Scott on the floor. Panic and confusion is noted on his face.

1.35- Camera is on a high angle on Scott's Mum to show she is still holding the power. However, just like in the previous clip, the close-up isn't used - just the mid-shot. This is because, Scott is the main character and his emotions determine what actually happens in the story. The TV show is being told from his point of view.

Clip 8
1.43 - Stiles and his Dad are seen in a mid-shot. They are in the woods and a sense of tension is created as the camera focuses on the two of them (in a two - shot) walking off into the distance.

Clip 9
1.46 - Mid-shot of Scott and Stiles in the boys' changing room. We get a sense of location. The clip is a two - shot of the boys talking.

1.54 - Camera angle quickly changes to a close - up of Stiles, when he hears something he doesn't like. This is a good way to get this message across to the viewers.

1.59 - Close - up of Scott answering back to Stiles.

2.09 - Simple noddy shot of Stiles reacting to Scott. This proves a lot to the viewers about the friendship the two best friends have with each other and Stiles' personality.

Pretty Little Liars
- This is a still from a recent season of the US TV Drama; 'Pretty Little Liars' (PLL)

In this high angled view of the girls, we can see them in full length and everything around them. From this angle it shows they're being victimised. A sign of weakness.

The Filming Industry

Film Production

Film production is the overall production of creating a film. The process of making, and creating a story through the process of motion picture.

Stages of production

Development
The development stage is when the creator of the film comes up with an initial idea for a successful moving picture. They could get their ideas form things like novels, already made films, documentaries, real life experiences, magazines, video games, fairy tales or even a complete original idea... the list could go on. What this stage is though - is planning. Suggesting ways to get an audience to fall in love with a story or series of events. Once the ideas have been briefly made, the creator, or producer, works with writers in order to produce a clear synopsis of the plot. This is to clarify the plot of the film and make sure the team of people working on the feature, are all aware of the main points that are going to be created through making the film. Once the initial plot has been set out, the writers can then go onto breaking down the film into chapters, like chapters of a novel. This part is very important, because it is important to set out a structured outline and organize the story into parts, so when filming begins, it doesn't get confusing and awkward. Before the screenplay is produced by the writer, a 25-30 page 'treatment' is produced for the film. This basically includes, a description of the chapters in detail and the character's motives throughout the film. Also it creates a good collection of stills and drawings that would give the directors and producers some idea of what things are meant to look like and lastly, the moods and atmospheres that should be created at key parts. Sometimes, producers and writers will work together to produce a 'scriptment' once the synopsis or plot has been produced.

Once all these steps have been completed, it is then usually the time for the screenwriter to write a clear screenplay for the film. This usually takes a good several months to do as it is a lot of work for the screenwriters and writers of the film to come up with good stage directions, dialogue and movement for the cast. They have a lot of things to consider and sometimes, it takes more than one attempt to create the perfect script. However, some producers may skip the previous steps and develop submitted screenplays which investors, studios and other interested parties assess through a process called 'script coverage'. A film director might be contacted early on at a stage when companies will assess the financial success a film is likely to have as this is something industries take into deep consideration, also relying on DVD sales and marketing sales they will receive from the film. Film distributors also consider the target audience of the film and it's general genre.

After this, the screenwriters and producers of the film, will go to potential film financiers and pitch their plot. They also take their plot and synopsis to big actors and stars. that they want to get in the film. The producer may have some actors in mind that he/ she wants to star in the film and they will be the actors that they'll go to first. The film idea will go to 'development hell' if they don't succeed this stage. Many films do end up this way, that is why it so hard for film producers to get their synopsis off the ground. If films investors and studios like the look of the film synopsis, then the film gets put on a "green light". The film studio or anyone that is interested, will want some financial banking from the film. Then both companies can sign contracts and organize a clear marketing plan and a clear target audience to advertise to. The film plans can then go into the pre-production stage, which enables more work to be done.

This is the opposite way round for the animated films, because the directors together will create a rough storyboard of the film and present them to an executive producer and once the film has been "green-lighted", then the company get in screenwriters who produce a screenplay to go with the rough story plot.

Pre- Production
This is part of the process when the plot gets carefully analysed. At this stage, a production company and production office is made. Illustrators and designers will be called in to create a storyboard, if not already made. This is the best way to present the ideas and chapters that take place in the film. At this point also, a budget is drawn up. It will estimate how much money the film will make and the success it will have. For major productions, insurance is procured to protect against accidents. The producer and director will hire a crew, that includes a camera team and a team of editors etc. they will also hold auditions for actors to come in and claim for a role in the film. The size and success of the team, will determine on the film's budget cost. If the company isn't well known and the film has been "green-lighted" just, then the company will struggle to get a full well working team. A big Hollywood film, will take on a team of hundreds in order to get the amount of work done in the time scale they have. For example, Iron Man 3 hired a huge crew of 3,310 people.

The main roles you'll find in a crew of people working behind a film production are:

- Storyboard artist: This role is pretty self explanatory. The storyboard artist will create visual images for the directors and producers of the film.
- Director: The director is responsible for the storytelling, creative ideas and acting of the film.
- Assistant Director (AD): There are many types of ADs. These are in charge of shooting schedules and logistics of the production.
- Unit Production Manager: Manages the production budget and production schedule. They also report, on behalf of the production office, to the studio executives or financiers of the film.
- Location Manager: Again, pretty self explanatory. These people are in charge of where each chapter of the film is set. Most of the time, filming is done in the studio picked out by the location managers. It is shot in a controllable environment where sounds can be used. When filming out of the studio, location managers can call the cast to film on location.
- Art Director: The art director works with the production designer. They manage the art department, which makes production sets.
- Production Designer: They work with the art director to create visual conception of the film.
- Costume Designer: The costume designers are in charge of what each character wears. They work closely with the art department and other departments too. It's important they get the perfect costume sorted for each character for each scene of the film, as it is something the audience relates to visually.
- Makeup and Hair Designer: This is another important role, as it is also something the audience visually see and judge. The makeup and hair designers will work closely with the costume designers to create a look from the actors that they want.
- Casting Director: These types of directors are in charge of holding auditions for the actors. They take responsibility for making sure every role in the script is filled. This normally takes some time, but with good team work it is always a goal to achieve the best success in acting.
- Choreographer: They create coordinates for the movement and dance in the film. As you can imagine, a lot of choreographers and a large amount of work from them, are required for genres like musical. Some films also credit a fight choreographer.
- Director of Photography (DP): The director of photography supervises all the photography and filming of the entire film.
- Production Sound Mixer: They are the head of the sound department during the production stage of filmmaking. They record and mix the audio on set. They work with all the departments.
- Sound Designer: These designers create the aural conception of the film, working with the supervising sound editor.
- Composer: The composer will create new music for the film (usually not until post-production).

Production

In the production phase of the filmmaking, the video production is actually created and shot. At this stage, more film crew members can be recruited. For example:
 - Property Master - Script Supervisor / Supervisors- Assistant Director/ Directors - Stills Photographer/ Photographers - Picture Editor / Editors - Sound Editor/ Editors

The production office will suggest unique roles possibly, depending on what film is being produced. Assigned roles may even have to be produced, to enable the things the Director wants to happen on set.

Then filming can begin. The Director assess 'call times' for each department in the crew. The actors normally get different call times, as they aren't needed until filming. Normally, the sound department, costume, hair and makeup department and art department all have to come in earlier as it takes weeks, sometimes months, to produce and create the right set for the film. Whilst the crew prepare, the cast are being glammed up and made ready for shooting. The actors will rehearse the script with the producers and directors alongside them helping them how to act and what to do. The crew on sound and lighting will also take time rehearsing with the cast as they need to know what everyone is doing so the sound and lighting look great alongside the acting in the film. When the crew and cast are ready, filming can begin properly.

I won't go into detail explaining the process of the director's actions on set. I think you can all picture how a team go about filming actors. The Director will confirm everyone's ready by shouting 'ACTION' and end it off by saying 'CUT'. It takes a bit of time to get all the departments ready and perfect in every shot. This is why it takes several attempts to film each scene. Were all only human.

When all the filming has been completed for the day, to the Director's wishes, he himself, decided the next day's shooting schedule. A daily progress report is then sent to the production office with everyone's 'call times' on, for the next day. The call sheets are distributed to the whole crew. Sometimes, the cast and crew will sit and review the 'dailies'. These are clips from the day's work. Actors and producers can pick up on little parts from the shooting and make any corrections in the future if needs be. It is a large amount of hard work though. There's an average of 14-18 filming hours in the day for the typical film crew. That's a long day of filming.

For the production phase on live-action films, synchronizing work schedules of key cast and crew members is very important, since for many scenes, several cast members and most of the crew must be physically present at the same place, at the same time. This is normally difficult when the bankable stars have several projects on the go at once. For animated films, this part is usually easier as all that is required is the voice talent, which is recorded in a studio. It's sometimes the case that, actors don't even meet each other until the marketing stage of the film and a premier is carried out.

 Post-Production

At this stage in the production, the film/video is assembled by the video/film director. The shot film material is edited and so is the sound. The music that appears in the film are composed and edited in. Also, sound effects are sorted and placed. Any computer-graphic visual effects are digitally added. Finally, all sound elements are mixed into 'stems', which are then married to the picture. It's at the point then, when film production companies can 'lock' the film. Everything is complete.

Distribution

The distribution stage, is the final stage of the process. The film is distributed to the cinemas around the world, or it is sent straight to direct consumer media (DVD, VCD, VHS, Blue-Ray) or lastly, direct download from digital media provider. The film is distributed as required (either onto reels or hard-disk drive) and distributed to cinemas for exhibition. Along with the film the advertisements are sent with the drive. Posters, leaflets, trailers etc. are sent out into the eyes of the media to get the film to be noticed. The film is promoted worldwide, in order to get the target audience's attention.
Then a launch party is normally organised. This includes, red carpet events, press releases, interviews with press and other companies, press preview screenings and film festival screenings. An individual website is created for the film and other social networking sites are created, normally to connect with the audience and promote the film so much further. It's sometimes a big deal for a film production team to organise promotional tours that some of the cast and crew attach themselves to. This is when the team travel to different places around the world to attend interviews and promotion evenings, screenings for fans to attend to and many more exciting things.

Independent Film-Making

Nowadays, it's quite common to find films online, that have been produced by independent film companies.

Independent filmmaking is filmmaking produced out of the mainstream. It all began when DV technology was introduced to the media world. Independent filmmakers rely on film festivals to get their work distributed and recognised.

Nowadays, it's easier to do. With the internet as a big advantage, independent producers can attach their work onto sites, like 'YouTube', and it's through that, where they achieve a large audience of viewers, that turn into fans. With internet movie distribution, independent filmmakers who fail to garner a traditional distribution deal, now have the ability to reach global audiences.

Teen Wolf / Representation

Representation of characters - Image 4 – Teen Wolf

Dominant Reading

This is a promo picture for the TV Drama Series: 'Teen Wolf'. We can see in the centre of the image, the character of Alison clutching onto her boyfriend Scott. For the dominant audience reacting to this photo, it suggests she relies on him for control in something, or most things. Whilst she is hanging on, we can see Scott showing bravery and standing tall holding onto his girlfriend. He is caring and holds dominance. This is the same situation for the couple in the background of the front two characters. The creator would of chosen to place the other two characters on their own, because it suggests they don't have anyone to rely on or they are there for a threat... especially the character of Derek (to the far right of the promo photo), who is holding a threatening facial expression, which would cause some curiosity for anyone who is looking at the image and trying to figure out who plays who in the TV Drama.

Negotiated Reading

Some audience members may feel that everyone in the photo is a threat to each-other. They may look at their ages and figure out they're all around the same age and also the fact that nobody in the photo is smiling would suggest that the topics dealt with on the show, are serious ones.

Oppositional Reading

Feminists would look at this photo and think that the female characters are being weakened by the males. This is because, they are holding onto their male partners for reassurance or maybe because they're being told what to do, because of the arrogant facial expressions held by the males.

Representation of characters - Image 3 – Dot Cotton (Eastenders)

Dominant Reading

·         Most viewers would look as this image and think of a stereotyped old woman being shown. She is wearing an old coat and has a handbag that is small. She keeps her money in a tin in the kitchen, because it is thought of that the elderly do not trust banks and would rather keep their money on them at all times.

Negotiated Reading

·         Other viewers may think that her elderly stereotype features can be overlooked by her painted nails and permed hair. Some people may be thinking that she can still look after herself, even if she I old and why does it matter if she keeps her money in a tin? Some people do that at a younger age, because they prefer holding the physical cash.

Oppositional Reading

·         Some audience members may think that the complete opposite reason for the old woman holding money. Some may feel that she has the big load of money in cash, because she is a drug dealer, or she is buying drugs. Some may concentrate on her facial expressions being confused and scared. This may lead to her fussing and checking over the money to see if it is all there in order for her to buy the things that she needs.

Representation of characters - Image 2 – Suits

Dominant Reading

·         The creator wants us to think that the men are in power, just because they are at the front of the shot and are wearing suits. They aren’t looking at the women, but the women are looking at them. Their body posture and the way they are looking in their facial expressions, shows they are determined and maybe tell us that their characters in the show are hardworking and successful people.

Negotiated Reading

·         Everyone in this photo is obviously of higher class. They are all wearing successful clothing and are standing in a formality that seems structured and secure.

Oppositional Reading

Some feminists looking at this photo would feel that the women are being sexualised, because they are wearing revealing clothing and they're also looking down on the men (who seem to be in more control and power). They are leaning in on the men and they are more relaxed. Some viewers may feel that they are just there as entertainment for the men.

Representation of characters - Image 1 – Casualty

In this scene we can see a doctor, a nurse and a consultant.
The nurses’ face isn’t shown, because her work isn’t benefiting the patient who is obviously seriously hurt, because the facial expressions on the doctor’s and consultants face show confusion and concentration. The other 2 characters have the most power.

The races are mixed, which shows that the job isn’t suited for just one ethnicity.

Dominant Reading

·         The creator intends that the audience react in a shocked way from this still image, because the look on the characters faces show that the patient is seriously hurt. From this photo we cannot tell who the patient is, but for the audience (whom will know more), the patient could maybe be a character that is important to the show, therefore the creator will want the audience to react in the most effective way.

Negotiated Reading

·         Some audience members may think the image is trying to prove that people from other countries have more intelligence than the typical British worker.

Oppositional Reading

·         Depending on what the viewer may think, determines how the image is portrayed. Casualty being a series on TV means that there are characters on the show that some viewers have developed feelings for, so they will react differently for each character. Some people may think about the race in this picture and some people will judge the work of the genders.
